Até (two syllables) is the spirit (daimona) of delusion, infatuation, blind folly, rash action and reckless impulse who led men down the path to ruin. Her power was countered by the Litai (Prayers) which followed in her wake.
The oldest child of Eris, Até grew up on Olympus rather than in the underworld where most of her family resided. As the oldest, she took her sisterly pleasure in torturing her siblings, and easily established herself as the family anchor when Eris went a bit flaky over things. As infatuation and love’s folly, she spent most of her time in Aphrodite’s court, cavorting contently whenever time allowed.
When it was decided by Zeus to offer Pandora her little box’o’evil things, it was Até and her siblings who were shoved so delicately inside, forced to remain so until Pandora released them into the world. Understandably, this made her the slightest bit bitter. The fact that Elpis, or Hope, was stuck in the box still for some time. This, combined with others things in her history, made her a bit of a hellion, and eventually in anger Zeus threw Até down to earth forever, forbidding that she ever return to heaven or to Mt. Olympus. Até then wandered about, treading on the heads of men rather than on the earth, wreaking havoc on mortals. When thrown down by Zeus, Até landed on a peak in Phrygia called by her name. There Ilus later, following a cow, founded the city of Ilion, that is Troy.
For millennia, Até wandered earth, doing that thing she does best. With a well-earned reputation of being not a person you’d want to cross, most stayed out of her way, hoping not to come to her notice. And for good reason.
In more recent history, Até’s eon-long streak of celibacy and avoiding any form of personal entanglement was done in by a simple favor asked to her uncle, Momos. While Momos had been hitting on her for years, Até had generally assumed it was more out of habit than any real desire, given that her stance on self-denial of pleasure was well known, if understood by none. His fee for the favour was a kiss… and she gave in to what she thought would be a simple, one time thing.
One thing led to another, then another, then another… and after a lot of fighting, a lot of excuses on her part, a few nights together and at least one encounter involving the wall of a busy dive bar, Até finally gave in. Her warnings that she’d ruin him if she got hurt were brushed aside, and now he’s stuck with her. So far, he doesn’t seem to mind.
When arriving in this world Até replaced Bobby Flay, which worked well for her, as she has both a love and talent for cooking. She agreed to move in with Momos, and lives in fear he’ll talk her into marriage. She worries that love is making her soft – a fear egged on by her sister Adikia. They currently live in the penthouse at 1040 5th Ave, in NYC.
Edit: IN GAME HISTORY
On 3.15.09, Até broke down and married Momos. While happy about this, she'd be quite happy if no one everhad to mention it.
And Caesar's spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Até by his side come hot from Hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice
Cry "Havoc!" and let slip the dogs of war…
~William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar (Act III, Sc. I)
Note – as with a lot of mythology, there are a lot of contradictory myths out there. This history is based on some of those, as well as a few years of RP. Also, there's a lot of crack. Too many "What if's" at 3AM. I warn them, but they never listen.
