Emony was born Emony Odaren in 2210 on the planet of Trill, located in the Kalandra Sector of the Alpha Quadrant, lightyears away from Earth. She grew up on tales of the symbionts her people treasured and protected above all else and entered training to become a host to a symbiont when she reached the proper age. Emony also had a passion for gymnastics and practiced it alongside her the training she was undergoing to become a host. Sometime prior to 2224, Emony was selected to host the Dax Symbiont and was joined with it after the symbiont's previous host, Tobin, passed away.

From that moment on, she ceased to be Emony Odaren, a person with only the experiences of her short life to guide her and became Emony Dax, a Joined Trill with the knowledge of two previous lifetimes at her disposal. Emony continued to excel at gymnastics, entering the 2224 Olympics that were held on Alderbaran and brought herself quadrant-wide fame when she became a three-time latinum medalist at the games.

She eventually became interested in inter-species relations and strived to use her love of gymnastics to help promote interstellar tolerance--something she would attribute, partially, to the Lela in her, as her first host had been a councilwoman within Trill's government. Such ambitions brought her to Earth to the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi in 2245 to judge a gymnastics meet. Here, she met a seventeen-year-old Leonard McCoy, whom she was intrigued by and took an interest in. This led to a brief relationship between the two, in which Emony would break the rules of her people and confide in McCoy that she was a host.  Later, when there was an attempt on her life and another Trill, Kejjis Nar, was injured, the fact that she told McCoy about the symbionts became evident when he assisted in saving the lives of both Kejjis and the Nar Symbiont, which Emony was scolded for.

Having gone against tradition, Emony was instructed to leave Earth and the Human behind. She did her best to let him down easy and left Earth for Trill. It wouldn't be until years and several hosts later that Dax would encounter Leonard McCoy again.
