Eskarina Smith, or Esk, is a character from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.

Before the Game

In Discworld, eight is considered a magical number. The eighth son of the eighth son becomes a wizard. Esk's parents had seven boys and then a girl. The dying wizard that handed his magical staff (and its inherent powers) to Eskarina didn't realize that she was a daughter, not a son. There was no taking it back, however. No one had ever heard of a female wizard! It wasn't supposed to happen! Esk's parents tried to fight against it, even going so far as throwing the staff into the fire. This transferred the pain to Eskarina, though, as her fate was tied to the staff.

Then her parents tried to send her to learn witchcraft from Granny Weatherwax. Witchcraft, much different than wizardry, was the proper sort of magic for a girl. Esk was unimpressed by the headology, though, and her wizardly ways made Granny Weatherwax uncomfortable. Eventually the witch wound up helping Esk sneak into the all-male wizard academy, the Unseen University. There she pretended to be part of the janitorial staff, sneaking into classrooms and trying to learn what she could. She wound up saving the world, and the head wizards were so impressed that they declared her an honorary graduate.
