He's the only child of his father, who degenerated into a drunken and violent mess upon his wife's death, and regards the infamously devilish Heathcliff more as his father than anyone else. He's a simple man, who only just knows how to read and write, who managed to capture the heart of Catherine Linton.

He comes to the world of UTR from just after the end of Wuthering Heights, before he's managed to marry Catherine.
