PERSONALITY/HISTORY

Ilya was born prematurely, and found struggling to survive in the ruins of a burned church in the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire, in October of 1871. Ilya was put in ICU, spearated from his mother. Fire broke out in the nursery, but a quick thinking nurse was able to snuff out the flames before the fire spread. His first nine months were spent in hospital where he was coddled and spoiled by the staff, as well as his mother. He seemed to be a happy baby, conent to lay in his crib and stare up at a mobile. He rarely cried, but he didn't laugh either. He was not affectionate, and tended to go stiff or limp when someone picked him up.

In school, Ilya was quiet and reserved. He rarely asked questions or spoke up in class. He was easily intimidated, and tried to keep to himself as much as possible. When pushed too hard, he would lash out, often biting his tormentors to the point of medical care.

As Ilya grew, his temper became more prominent, and Ilya was often reprimanded at school. He was the butt of many jokes, which Ilya seemed to tolerate without comment, until at age seven, he was pushed to the point of unreasonable anger. Fire broke out in the classroom, and burned the school to the ground. There were several injuries, and two fatalities, one the boy who had been tormenting Ilya. No one connected Ilya's boiling anger with the fire, and investegators found it to be electrical in nature. Ilya's mother knew different, and took Ilya to a psychiatrist, under the guise of needing counselling for the fire. He had seen his classmate burned, after all.

Ilya was heavily medicated, medication was used to subdue his behaviour, and he was something of a zombie. Off his medication, Ilya was almost frantic, unable to focus at all. His mother made sure he did not miss a dose, until she decided to ween him off the meds entirely. Ilya's anger erupted with drastic consequences. He assaulted another boy at school, instantly pinning him to the floor and biting his neck. Ilya was pulled off the boy, and taken to a local hospital where he was admitted for psychiatric observation. That night, fire claimed the hospital-most of the patients and staff were killed. Ilya was among the few who got out.

Ilya's mother, a Romanian Gypsy named Kezia, then began to home school the boy, until her apparent death when Ilya was just 15. Ilya was taken into state custody, but the home where he was placed burned to the ground Ilya's first night there. The cause was determined to be electrical, and though some thought it off a history of fores followed Ilya, no one seemed to put the facts together. Ilya slipped away during the blaze, and was presumed dead in the fire. He took to the streets, living the life of a roving gypsy, wandering from town to town, taking food where he could find it, working when he was able to make a few dollars.

Ilya has always been a quiet man. He keeps to himself. He does not need social stimuli. He is a solitary creature. He does not crave companionship the way most people do. As shown below, he lived for a number of years, decades, alone in the wilderness. Reintroduced to society, Ilya is a dependable worker, he takes pride in his work. Whether making coffee or preparing food, the act of it is more important to him than the people he serves. He would say he has no use for people.

Ilya did not know who or what he really was for a long while. He emerged from his self imposed exile to frequent book stores and such, in an attempt to research his unique situation. He knew he had been born in 1871, though he seemed to cease aging around the turn of the century. By the late 1960's, Ilya still appeared to be in his early 30s. Combined with what he knew to be his strengths and weaknesses (he had not realised he could control fire), he determined he must be a dhamphir, the child of a vampire father and a human mother. That would explain why his mother refused to discuss his father.

He is a slow learner of facts and information, though he catches on quickly to physical tasks. Meaning he never did well in a school setting, but he thrives in a work setting because it's hands on, physical work rather than intellectual learning. He is thus a dependable worker who strives to do his best at all times.

Within the UTR universe, Ilya has been reunited with his father, the vampire Malakai Chmlyk. Ilya is living with his girlfriend, Kris following a destructive fire at the casino resort where Ilya lived and worked.

After meeting a fellow firebug, Ilya broke up with Kris and built a fire proof home with Delia McDermott.
