Before the Game

The unexpected occurred when Toshiko Sato and Jack Harkness fell in love. It was a situation that took the rest of the members of Torchwood by surprise. Owen and Ianto used to argue over how it would or would not last. Gwen was simply a silent observer. One day she finally told both men to sod off and take a good look at Jack and Tosh. They came to the realization that the two genuinely loved one another. Their relationship was unconventional, but it suited them both well.

Tosh and Jack did officially marry, much to everyone's surprise even though they saw how much they loved each other. They had always thought that the two would have an unconventional relationship, but they didn't. Two years after they married, Tosh found out she was pregnant. When Kyoko was born, Jack was lost to his daughter. He insisted on a Japanese name due to her mother's heritage, Tosh insisted on honoring her father somehow. They agreed on a first name of Kyoko and after much talking and Jack falling in love with his wife more, they agreed on Jacqueline and Estelle as her two middle names.

The first few months of Kyoko's life were hard for Jack. The more he held her, the more the situation with Jasmine and the fairie creatures came back to haunt him as he thought of how he would have felt if Kyoko had been the chosen one. He regretted the decision he made as he thought about it, but Tosh reminded him that if he had not made that decision, he probably could never have had the chance to have his daughter born. By recognizing that, Jack was able to forgive himself for that decision.

Kyoko is an interesting mixture of her parents. She has the book intelligence of her mother, the street intelligence of her father. Physically she looks like Tosh but has her father's eyes. She also heals very quickly and easily, something she got from her father after what happened to him. She is hard to kill, but she is not immortal like her father. She has taken after them both as a member of Torchwood now that she's older. She grew up in the base, often spending time by her mother's side at her computers. She knew how to hack into a system by the time she was ten years old. Tosh was annoyed, but secretly proud, whereas Jack didn't hide the pride he felt in his daughter.

Tosh was killed when Kyoko was twelve. Suffering a fatal wound during one of Torchwood's investigations, Tosh died in Jack's arms. Before she took her last breath, she made him promise that he would take care of Kyoko, but not hold her back at the same time. She knew that Jack could grow too overly protective of their daughter, especially with Tosh being killed in the line of duty. He promised he wouldn't. Telling his daughter that her mother was killed was the hardest thing Jack ever had to do. The two kept each other strong as they moved past their loss.

By the time Kyoko was 15, she was already starting to take over the role her mother had vacated after her death. Jack hated to admit how much it made him uncomfortable because he was as proud at the same time. He wouldn't allow her on the scene of any of their investigations till she was 18. She's been with Torchwood for ten years now in her mother's role. Despite being 25 years old, her father still is extremely protective of her, but does his best to not smother her. Each day he grows even more proud of the accomplishments she's made, seeing Tosh in her every day.

Kyoko's found herself in this new world, uncertain of how. She is almost positive, however, that she got pulled into the time rift while inside the Torchwood hub. They had been investigating its activity again and she was in the process of working on some new readings when she ended up where she is now.
