Lirael is a character from Garth Nix's Abhorsen Trilogy.

Before the Game

Lirael grew up with the Clayr, a group of women with the Sight. She herself never received any visions, and she felt terribly left out. Eventually she was told by the Clayr's that they had a vision, and Lirael needed to perform a task. They couldn't give her any details, only a location. So Lirael embarked on a journey that took her far from the Clayr's glacier she had always known, accompanied by a mysterious magical creature known only as the Disreputable Dog.

Lirael discovered that she was a Remembrancer--a person who could see the past (not the future, like her sisters). To do this, she had to use special tools--a mirror and a set of pipes--and travel into Death. It was dangerous, but Lirael undertook the task, knowing it was part of a special destiny that she had. A powerful necromancer was trying to destroy the world as they knew it, and Lirael had to stop it.

Later, Lirael discovered the truth about the parents she had never known. Her mother was a Clayr (this she'd known), and her father was the former Abhorsen. An Abhorsen is a "good" necromancer, so to speak. They use Charter magic to send the dead on to their final resting place, and to keep the living safe. There is only one at a time, and the title travels through blood. Lirael's father had been dead for years, and the current Abhorsen was his daughter, Sabriel--Lirael's half-sister. Now Lirael became the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, and she carried the Abhorsen bells that commanded the dead.
