HISTORY

Born in Russia in the 1820s, Rurik never knew his father. His mother raised him in seclusion, fearing for his livelihood outside her fortress. She was a very powerful witch, and had many enemies who would have taken the child from her. Rurik's mother schooled him at home, teaching him several languages (Russian, of course. English, Spanish, French, Mandarin, and German. Rurik was raised to be fluent in all these.)

Rurik was six years old when lightning struck him between the shoulder blades. His mother called on a witch doctor to see the boy at the home. This was the first person other than his mother that Rurik ever saw. The man recognised great potential in Rurik, and came back in the dark of night to steal the boy out of his bed.

He began a proper education into witchcraft, teaching the boy how to focus his energy, his thoughts, and emotions. This often included beating the boy into submission, and occasionally raping him as a means to control him further. Rurik resisted at first, crying endlessly to see his mother. He was finally permitted to see her, from a distance, as she had been enslaved by vampires. As the story goes, she was kidnapped while searching for her son. Rurik would never see her again (though he continues always to look for her).

Rurik grew to be a strong witch. A loner, he broke away from his captor in the early 1870s. Rurik's mastery at control allowed him to conceal his true identity. He became a spy for the Russians, and eventually relocated to the United States, looking for the freedom the country seemed to advertise. He has never returned to Russia, and feels there is nothing left for him there. He has made a life for himself traveling the globe.

Rurik has never had a pleasant or consensual sexual experience. Due to the abuse of the witfch doctor who raised him, Rurik associates sexual activity with pain and dominance. Sexual dominance was used to control him from an early age, and Rurik was denied any pleasure from the encounters with his mentor. Once he broke free of the man. Rurik had no interest in sexual relations of any kind. The first woman who showed interest in pursuing a relationship with Rurik was tragically killed when she stepped in front of a car. Similar situations have happened to two others in recent years. Rurik experiences intimacy through an ongoing feeding relationship with the vampire Malakai Chmlyk. His blood is strong, and he is able to feed Kai several times a week, in exchange for vampiric protection over his shop. Kai will occasionally take advantage of Rurik's shop, if he finds himself needing something. Rurik simply looks the other way.

Rurik and Kai first met in their mutual home city of Russia, shortly after Rurik left his home and was on the streets begging for scraps. Kai likely intended to prey upon and kill him from feeding, but as he drank from the fledgling witch, he (as the witch doctor before him) recognised great strength and potential in Rurik. Kai pulled back moments before Rurik's heart stopped, and nurtured the witch back to full strength. In the beginning the relationship was tentative at best. Kai did not seek to hold Rurik captive, but allowed him to leave of his own will. Rurik did not leave right away. He felt a strong bond with Kai, despite their differences. Rurik continued to feed Kai, in exchange for Kai's protection.

Within the UTR Universe, Rurik has opened himself up to a sexual relationship with Malakai, and has found it quite pleasurable.

As of January 24, 2009, Rurik Markov is a vampire, turned by Malakai, so that he wouldn't die. Rurik chose to be turned.
